    The Miracle and Its Price

Somewhere in the mountains of ancient Sadoros, in a valley that no map records and no road leads to, there is a sanctuary where the desperate go to be saved. They come on foot, on stretchers, on the backs of weeping relatives. They come because their child is dying, because their king is poisoned, because the wound will not close and the fever will not break and every healer they have consulted has said the same thing: there is nothing more we can do.

The Healing Hands can do more. They can mend any injury, reverse any mortal wound, restore vitality that should be beyond recovery. Their touch leaves flesh whole and spirits shattered, because the Healing Hands do not work for free, and their price is never gold.

They ask for the things that matter. An unborn child. A fortune that feeds a dynasty. The memories of your happiest days. Years carved from your remaining life. A fragment of your soul. The price is always proportional to the miracle, and the Healing Hands do not negotiate, do not explain, and do not judge. They healed saints and murderers, noble paladins and black-hearted tyrants without differentiation. To them, Dolos the Butcher and young Althea the farmer's daughter were equals, as long as they could pay.

    The Price

The Healing Hands never bartered for gold or trinkets of mortal value. Instead, they sought things interwoven with fate itself.

The Unborn Child was a favor highly coveted by the Hands. Mothers who turned to them to save their kin left knowing their next child would belong to the Hands from the moment it quickened in their womb. What use the mystics had for those souls was unknown, though it was said they grew stronger with each life claimed.

Entire Fortunes could be demanded. Even the wealthiest kings found their coffers emptied. Crops wilted, kingdoms fell into ruin, families starved when the price was paid in full.

Memories, Time, or Names were sometimes the currency. The Hands were known to ask for a person's memories of their most joyous days, trading happiness for survival. In other cases, they demanded years carved from a person's life or the essence of their true name, leaving them a shadow of who they once were.

A Piece of the Soul was the most dreaded price and rarely spoken of. Those who offered part of their animus often felt a hollowness afterward, as if they moved through life incomplete, never again whole.

    The Mark of the Healed

Those who survived the touch of the Healing Hands were forever marked: an ethereal scar etched on body and soul, glowing faintly under moonlight. Kings covered the mark with golden jewelry and silks. Commoners bore it with silent reverence or shame. But for all its beauty, the mark came with another cost: those spared by the Healing Hands often found the threads of their fate unraveled. Loved ones grew distant. Friends turned bitter. A lingering specter of misfortune seemed to hover over the healed forever, as if fate itself resented the intervention.

    The Chamber of Fate

The Healing Hands were led by a secretive council known as the Chamber of Fate: five of the most powerful and ancient members, immortal sages who each commanded a different aspect of healing. Their true names were unknown to the world, though tales assigned them titles: Mother of Knots, The Ageless Weaver, Hollowed Mother, The Bonesetter, and The Mournkeeper.

The Chamber held three core mandates. First, preservation of their craft: the Hands believed they were custodians of sacred, forgotten magic that predated the gods themselves. Second, the balance of life and fate: every healing must be repaid, not just for the Hands' benefit but to maintain the universal equilibrium they were bound to protect. Third, ascension beyond flesh: whispered in hushed tones and spoken of only in fragments, the Hands believed in an ultimate goal of severing themselves from the bonds of mortality entirely, transcending into pure power.

The Chamber resided in the Whispering Vale, a legendary sanctuary whose exact location was unknown to all but the most privileged acolytes and those who managed to fulfill nearly impossible rituals of discovery.

    Those Who Fought Back

Few possessed the might or will to oppose the Healing Hands, but names emerged.

The Riven Priory, a group of roving knight-errants, vowed to wipe the Hands from existence, wielding enchanted weapons designed to seal the mystics' souls and render them mortal. They were dismissed as zealous insects, until they successfully banished one of the Chamber's own.

Agatha the Unyielding, a folk hero, is said to be the only soul who wrenched a price back from the Healing Hands. She stormed the gates of the Whispering Vale itself to retrieve her stolen child, severing its magical protections and cursing the Hands with distrustful chaos.

The Sisters of Endurance once spearheaded a campaign to save a plague-stricken city. When the Healing Hands arrived and secretly claimed newborn children as their price, the Sisters attacked the Hands' retreat, liberating half the tithe but forced to let the rest (including a royal infant) fall to the bargain. Neither order has forgiven the other.
