Maelis Evenhart grew up in Larksville, a mining town in the foothills of the Sylvanoran Mountains. Her parents were ordinary townsfolk who didn't want her to become a soldier. Her aunt, Ysolde Evenhart, felt differently. Ysolde was a Knight Scholar of the Ladies of the Bust, famous for her two-sword style and the white cape she wore as a vow to Luwana̅h, The Humble Goddess, which earned her the name "the White Lady." She trained Maelis from the age of nine and argued with her parents until they let Maelis join the order at fifteen.

Three years ago, while Maelis was still an Initiate, Ysolde died holding a pass in Lumindale against a marauder ambush. Her body was never found. Only her bloodstained cape came back, wrapped around a signal post as if someone had meant it to be found. The order had broken its creed to never leave a Lady behind, and nobody talked about it.

Maelis responded by throwing herself into her training and finished at the top of her cohort. At her Declaration of the Roses, High Captain Rhiannon Drake gave her Ysolde's cape, which divided opinion within the order. Now a full Knight, Maelis has found hints in Ysolde's last letters that her death may not have been bad luck, including a mention of an unnamed contact in Celestaria. She has started quietly looking into it without telling anyone.
