Nizhari is a 24-year-old huntress and blade-keeper of the Zak Tribe, the most secretive and traditional of the Caldorian clans who guard the deepest stretches of the rainforest. She was born with striking red braided hair, a rarity among her people that the Zak interpret as a mark of favor from Zhae Tia, the Sky Jaguar spirit of bravery and fire. That mark set her apart from childhood: the elders watched her differently, the other children stared, and her mother trained her harder than her siblings to prepare her for whatever destiny the Jaguar's fire demanded.

She proved herself early. By her mid-teens she could track through rainstorms and move through the canopy without disturbing a single bird. At seventeen she completed her warrior's trial by solo-hunting a jungle cat that had been killing Zak children, tracking it for three days before finishing it with a single ambush strike. The tribe's blade-smith forged her sword, "Fang of the Grove," from traded highland iron and mounted the cat's jawbones as her spiked pauldrons.

The years after were harder. A border conflict with Tianlunese scouts pushing into Caldorian territory cost several Zak hunters their lives, including her older brother. She buried him at the base of his favorite tree. The loss drove her deeper into isolation, spending days alone in the canopy, taking the most dangerous scouting assignments, pushing herself past the point of sense.
