Kessa Blacktide is a 28-year-old pirate and smuggler-captain operating out of Siren's Bane, Duskwater's busiest port. She commands the Redknife, a fast sloop she bought with pooled coin from herself and four former crewmates after her previous ship was destroyed. She wears a white tunic, brown trousers, light leather armor with iron plating, a red bandana, and a red sash. She fights with a cutlass she calls Old Girl. She has tan skin, black hair, and a knife-fight scar running from her left eye to her jaw.

She was born in Siren's Bane to Dalla Blacktide, a tavern-keeper who ran the Knotted Rope: a dockside establishment that made its money by being useful to captains who needed discretion. Her father was a Zakaidian mercenary who shipped out before she was born and never returned. She grew up clearing tables, carrying messages between pirates, and learning to read people long before she could read words.

At sixteen she signed on with a Nyambran captain named Essata aboard the corsair Blackfin, where she spent five years learning smuggling, navigation, rigging, and the practical economics of piracy. A failed raid on a Bravonian merchant convoy off Sadoros killed Essata and destroyed the ship. Kessa rowed three survivors to Saltcrowns in a longboat, spent a year rebuilding her savings, then bought the Redknife and started her own operation.

She follows Duskwater's unwritten codes: pays her debts, keeps her word, never betrays crew, and draws a personal line at trafficking people. Her ambition is to build a permanent trading operation in Siren's Bane, something between a merchant house and a smuggling ring, with enough legitimacy to survive and enough teeth to discourage trouble. She has never been to Plunderholm. She intends to walk through its gates only when she has the leverage to matter.
