Songs span six language traditions: Thungalëthaur (Deep Elvish / Aldermark), Ikumariuq (Beringian Elvish), Jinìri (Desert Elvish), Ninangkoru (Bunian Elvish), German code-switching registers, and English. These are constructed languages (as in no one actually speaks them) and loosely based on real languages. For example, Thungalëthaur is a Proto-Germanic language based on Old High German and uses many Germanic conventions. Now, I don’t actually speak German (only studied it briefly in grade school), and the main reason it was selected as the base for my Deep Elvish is that the elves of the Aldermark Universe are a mountain people originating from Alpine passes (known as Baiuvarii elves, or Raetian elves). They coexisted with the early Bavarian humans and have lived there since Roman times.
