    First Impression

She reads the room before it reads her. There's a quality to the way she stands, weight settled, hands quiet, eyes cataloguing, that tells you she's already decided what you're about and what she'd do if you tried something. You get the sense she's not unfriendly. You also get the sense that unfriendly would be the last of your problems.

    Appearance

Mara Jade's hair draws attention before the rest of her does: a thick cascade of deep auburn-orange that catches light like embers and falls past her shoulders in loose, natural waves, usually hanging free or pulled into a rough knot at the nape of her neck when she's working. Her face is angular and precise, all high cheekbones and sharp jaw, with pale green eyes that border on grey and a steady gaze that holds a half-beat longer than comfortable. She wears a sleeveless, form-fitting black bodysuit under a sand-colored traveler's cloak, a deep slate scarf wound loosely at her throat, and amber-tinted goggles resting at her collarbone. A compact, straight-hilted lightsaber with a matte silver casing rides on a clip-mount at her left hip. She does not keep it hidden.

    Personality

Mara is sharp, self-contained, and has no patience for wasted sentiment. She thinks fast and speaks economically, deploying a dry, precision-tool humor when she wants to deflect, and occasionally when something genuinely strikes her as funny. She doesn't warm to people easily. The first twenty-some years of her life taught her that warmth was a liability and attachment was leverage, and those lessons don't dissolve just because the situation has changed. She respects skill quietly and honesty loudly, and she will tolerate a great deal from someone who delivers on both. Incompetence, particularly the theatrical kind that announces itself right before failing at something basic, gets nothing from her.

What most people don't clock immediately is that beneath the controlled exterior, Mara runs hot. She feels things with a depth she has never been comfortable admitting: loyalty, anger, grief. The anger tends to surface first. The grief takes longer, and she processes it alone, in the dark, with something to do with her hands. Her relationship with the Force is complicated in a way she doesn't discuss. She was trained in it from childhood, wired into Palpatine's design, and she was good at it the way a weapon is good at what it was made to do. Without the Emperor's voice telling her what to feel and what to suppress, the Force feels like a conversation she no longer knows how to have. She practices in private. She doesn't talk about it.

    Motivations

What Mara wants, more than anything she would say out loud, is to figure out who she is when she isn't somebody else's instrument. She was built to be a tool: trained in combat, deception, the Force, and the particular art of becoming whatever a room needed her to be. The Empire is gone. The question of who Mara Jade is when she isn't the Emperor's Hand is one she asks herself around 0300 most nights, and she can't yet answer it. She still believes in order. She watched the chaos that followed Endor: the power vacuums, the warlords, the New Republic's stumbling first steps. The mess offends her on a practical level. She didn't become a Rebel. She's not sure what she became. She is working on it, one job at a time, with the patience of someone who learned long ago that the things worth having require waiting for the right moment.

    Weaknesses

Mara was shaped from childhood to be loyal to a single will, and the absence of that structure left a hollow where her sense of purpose used to be. She fills it with jobs, motion, and discipline, and the result is that she can go weeks without stopping to ask whether what she's doing actually matters to her. By the time she does ask, she is usually already committed. She trusts poorly and slowly, which costs her. People who might genuinely help her get shut out through habit built over decades. Under real pressure she defaults to the coldest, most efficient version of herself, and that version sometimes makes decisions the rest of her has to live with afterward. She is not reckless. She is precise in ways that can slide into ruthless without much warning. And then there's Luke Skywalker: a knot of conflicting data she hasn't finished sorting through, the fact that he didn't kill her when he had every reason to, the unsettling way he looks at people like he actually sees them. He is a problem she hasn't solved, and she has thought about him more than she would ever say out loud.

    Quirks

When Mara is thinking hard, she rolls the hilt of her lightsaber slowly in her palm without activating it. People who have spent time around her recognize it as a sign that she's working something out and that interrupting would be unwise. She maintains her weapons every morning in a particular order, laying each component out in a precise arrangement and checking it against a standard only she knows. The routine takes about twenty minutes. She considers it non-negotiable, and she will not let anyone else touch the process. She has a very hard time sleeping in places where she can't see the door, and she hasn't managed to fix that. She is a genuinely excellent judge of people, their motives, their moods, their tells, trained into her by the Empire but also something she quietly enjoys: reading a room correctly gives her a satisfaction she can't entirely explain. She has, exactly once, laughed until she had to sit down, at a spectacularly terrible landing she witnessed in a spaceport on Nar Shaddaa. She doesn't bring it up. She thinks about it sometimes.

    World Context

Mara Jade occupies one of the more unsettled positions in the post-Endor galaxy: a former Emperor's Hand operating without an Empire. The Emperor's Hands were Palpatine's most elite covert operatives, answering to him alone, running missions the official Imperial apparatus could not acknowledge and did not need to. By seventeen, Mara was operating independently across half a dozen systems, slipping through identities that left no trace. She was exceptional at it. She was also, as she now understands with painful clarity, shaped to find the work meaningful, to feel the satisfaction of completion like something clean and righteous. Recognizing that she was built to feel that way has taken years and has not made it simpler.

In the post-Endor landscape, Mara carries skills that make her valuable and a history that makes her unwelcome. The New Republic does not trust former Imperial operatives, regardless of how far they have drifted from the remnant. The Imperial remnant itself is fractured and desperate enough that Mara's independence reads as betrayal. She found Talon Karrde's smuggling operation, better organized than most, and accepted a position several rungs below what she had been and several above what she would admit to needing. Karrde is direct in a way she has some respect for, and the work is honest about what it is.

Her Force sensitivity sets her apart from the smuggling world and connects her, whether she wants the connection or not, to the broader struggle over what the Force will mean in a galaxy without the Jedi Order or the Sith. Luke Skywalker is the most visible face of that question, and his presence in her orbit is something she has not resolved. Their history is sharp-edged: he didn't treat her like a threat when he could have, or rather, he treated her like someone who was more than a threat, which left her without a clean position to hold. She keeps moving forward, building something that is starting, very slowly, to feel like a life she chose.

    Favorites

    • Food: Ryshcate, a dense Corellian cake, dark with spices and a faintly bitter edge that most people find too heavy. She grew up eating something similar in the Imperial residential quarters where she was trained, and she's never stopped wanting it when she's cold or tired or needs something that feels like it has weight to it. She won't eat it in front of people she doesn't trust.
    • Drink: Black caf, no sweetener, brewed strong enough to be genuinely offensive. She drinks it in the morning as a declaration that the day is starting whether she's ready for it or not. She has also developed a grudging appreciation for Corellian whiskey on nights when caf isn't the right tool for the job.
    • Color: Slate grey and matte black. She gravitates toward them for practical reasons: they read neutral, carry no faction affiliations anymore, and disappear into most backgrounds. She's also worn them long enough that they feel like hers.
    • Animal: Shaak. Large, unflappable, and fundamentally unbothered by their own spectacle, they are the only creatures she has ever seen that seem completely indifferent to the fact that they are ridiculous. She respects that.
    • Music: She doesn't advertise it, but Mara has a strong preference for structured instrumental work: long compositions built around a central theme that develops and complicates itself over time before resolving. She finds them easier to think around than silence, and they don't require the emotional attention that a voice does. She keeps a small personal data chip with about forty hours of recordings she's collected from ports and markets across the Outer Rim.
    • Hobbies & Pastimes:
      • Navigation & Route-Charting: Mara is an exceptional pilot and she knows exactly why: control, precision, the clean logic of vectors and trajectories. But she genuinely enjoys charting courses through unmapped or poorly mapped sectors, treating unknown space as a puzzle that rewards patience and spatial instinct. She keeps a private navigational log of routes she's run that no one else knows about.
      • Sabacc: She plays rarely and only when the stakes are real enough to be worth her attention. She dislikes playing for fun. Playing for something is the whole point, and she's quietly very good at it.
      • Weapon Maintenance: Every morning, without exception, Mara disassembles, inspects, and reassembles her weapons in a specific order and arrangement that she has never explained to anyone. It takes twenty minutes, it is non-negotiable, and the ritual of it grounds her in a way she would not describe as sentimental but absolutely is.

    Background

Mara Jade has no memory of her parents. She doesn't know if they gave her up willingly, if they were taken from her, or if whatever early recollections she had were smoothed away during conditioning. She was identified as Force-sensitive very young. Palpatine chose her personally. The first home she ever had was a chamber in an Imperial facility where she learned to fight before she learned to read.

She was exceptional. By twelve she could best senior Imperial guards in hand-to-hand drills. By fifteen she had completed her first solo assignment. By seventeen she was operating independently across half a dozen systems, slipping in and out of identities that left no traces, carrying out work the official Imperial apparatus couldn't acknowledge. She was loyal, and she is clear-eyed about this now. She didn't follow orders because she had no choice. She followed them because she had been shaped into someone who believed in the work, who found the mission meaningful, who felt the satisfaction of completion like something clean. Recognizing that she was built to feel that way has taken years and hasn't made it simpler.

The Battle of Endor ended her world as she knew it. The Emperor's death left her without a mission, without a structure, without the only framework she had ever known for understanding her own purpose. She kept moving, because stopping wasn't something she knew how to do. She drifted through the post-Endor chaos on the residual momentum of her training, running jobs for whoever would pay, living on the edges of the underworld she had always navigated from above. She found Talon Karrde's operation eventually, and Karrde himself was direct in a way she had some respect for. She accepted a position and started building from there.

Luke Skywalker came into her orbit the way most complications do: from a direction she hadn't accounted for. Their history is sharp-edged and unresolved. He didn't treat her like a threat when he could have, or rather, he treated her like someone who was more than a threat, which was harder to handle, because it left her without a clean position to hold. She still doesn't know what to do with that. She keeps moving forward, one job at a time, building something that is starting, very slowly, to feel like a life she chose rather than one she was assigned.

    Relationships

    • Luke Skywalker: A knot she hasn't untangled: he saw something in her that she didn't ask him to see, and she has spent more time thinking about that than she would admit to anyone, including herself.
    • Talon Karrde: Her employer and the closest thing she has to a professional anchor; he is direct, competent, and does not pretend to be anything other than what he is, which is exactly the quality that earned her respect.
