Lucienne Darivel is a 135-year-old Noctyran Afflicted (vampire) and a prominent operative of the Fools faction in Noctyra, the hidden city-state in the Pale Mountains. She was turned during one of the later waves of the Spread and has spent more than a century behind Noctyra's walls. Lucienne has gradually become convinced that isolation is killing her people more slowly than the outside world ever could.
She has pale white skin, short black hair, red lips, and eyes that glow red when the hunger rises. She is exceptionally voluptuous and dresses the part: a red gown with generous cleavage and thigh slits, silver jewelry, and functional silver bracers. The look is deliberately theatrical. She believes the Afflicted will never be accepted if they present themselves as ashamed creatures of the dark, so she dresses like someone who expects to be seen.
She conducts unsanctioned diplomatic missions beyond Noctyra's walls, making contact with sympathetic mortals one conversation at a time. Her first two attempts were disasters. Her third, with a Verdanian herbalist was much more successful: small, secret trade relationships built on accumulated trust. Lucienne keeps a private journal of every mortal who has shown her kindness, over three hundred entries, which she treats as evidence that coexistence is possible.
Lucienne is caught between all three Noctyran factions: the Prags consider her a dangerous idealist risking Noctyra's secrecy, the Strong consider her a traitor who denies their superiority, and even within the Fools she occupies an exposed position as one of their most visible operatives. She belongs fully to none of Noctyra's social structures, which makes her, paradoxically, an advocate for belonging who does not fully belong anywhere.
