Frija is a 43-year-old city elf born in Khaisarigadhen in 1983, twenty years before the dissolution. Her name means "free; the state of being unchosen-upon", the same root that gives Freyja her name, and she has built her entire young life around that principle. She was raised in a quiet, bookish household by a textile restorer mother and a Thungalëthaur grammar teacher father. Both parents still live and work in Khaisarigadhen: her father teaching at the same school, her mother restoring textiles at the same museum, both now under the new government's administration rather than the empire's. The dissolution was the defining event of Frija's generation, but she experienced it with characteristic remove: she found books about it. What the transition did give her was a reason to leave, mostly because the softening of old imperial borders made the wider world more accessible, and München had the Bayerische Staatsbibliothek. She enrolled at Ludwig-Maximilians-Universität to study comparative literature (still attending, eight years in, no rush), and took a part-time research assistant position at the Staatsbibliothek three years ago.

Physically she's immediately recognisable: deep copper-red hair she can't control, freckles, grey-green eyes, and the voluptuous build characteristic of elven women, carried with total unselfconsciousness under oversized knit sweaters and denim shorts. She dresses like someone who got dressed in the dark while thinking about Chaucer.

Frija's defining trait is an almost compulsive hunger for human literature: she finds elvish writing too languid and argues that mortality gives human storytelling an urgency elves can't match. She reads everything from 15th-century manuscripts to contemporary romance novels and sees no contradiction between the two. Her secret long-term project is a comparative study of desire in human versus elvish fiction. She's warm, funny in a dry way, genuinely kind, and almost entirely passive, Frija uses books as a buffer against the messier parts of life and knows it. She's never had a romantic partner, lives in a flat that's essentially a book cave in Maxvorstadt, and considers an alley cat named Herr Müller her most reliable social connection. She is, by her own measure, at the very beginning of a very long life, with centuries of reading ahead of her.
