Immalik is a 94-year-old Khyagas sea-hunter living in Uyaraqvik, the Beringian elvish capital on the Kuskokwim River in southwestern Alaska. Her name, imaq (ocean) + -lik (possessing), marks her as a sea-hunter's daughter, and she lives the name: hunting ringed seal from a one-person kayak on the Bering Sea, working the summer king salmon run on the river, and tracking caribou with winter hunting bands across the tundra. She is competent at all of these and exceptional at none, which is the Khyagas ideal.

She has white hair, blue eyes with a faint reflective quality from enhanced kveldhsinn night vision, and the pale, blue-white skin of a people who evolved under four-month polar winters. Her build is compact and broad-shouldered: shorter and more heavily built than Alpine or Shikarapuran elves, following Bergmann's rule for cold-adapted populations. She carries the full elvish breast hypertrophy on this shorter frame. Her primary clothing is a formfitting bodysuit with caribou-skin layered interior for extra insulation, with a fur cloak or parka over it depending on the season. She works bare-handed at minus thirty Celsius and experiences cold not as discomfort but as information.

What makes Immalik unusual among her people is the width of her curiosity. Khyagas curiosity runs deep but narrow: salmon, caribou, ice, stone, the fifteen-thousand-year conversation with the living world. Immalik's runs wide. She collects stories from every Khyagas elf who travels outside the territory the way the Qasgiq collects laws. She knows about cars, the internet, and cities, in the sense that she knows they exist.

The pivot came at thirty-one, when a University of Alaska Fairbanks marine biologist named Dr. Anya Petrov arrived for a three-week salmon study. Immalik assisted the team, and what struck her wasn't the information: much of it duplicated Khyagas knowledge in different form. What struck her was the scale. Petrov knew about salmon in rivers Immalik had never heard of, on the far side of an ocean so large that Immalik's internal geography couldn’t comprehend it fully. The world was much bigger than she had imagined, everything in it was connected, and nobody had asked the Khyagas whether they wanted to be connected to Japan.

She has been quietly preparing ever since. Learning English seriously. In fact, Immalik collects English words she finds beautiful or strange. Current favorites include: "bureaucracy" (she enjoys the sound), "escalator" (she's not sure she believes in them), and "Tuesday" (she finds it hilarious that humans name their days). She is also memorising world geography from a battered 2003 atlas. Asking questions of every visitor. She wants to leave Uyaraqvik: to go out and come back, to see the human world that dominates the planet and understand the forces that are currently melting her people's ice. She suspects this understanding is necessary for Khyagas survival. She hasn't made this argument to the Qasgiq yet. At ninety-four, she's too young for her opinion to carry weight in council.
