Régha (RAY-gah) is a 187-year-old Strómalvar cattle rancher and boundary rider who manages 600 head of range cattle across three seasonal pastures in northwestern Montana. Her full name is Réghnethavi, "she who reads the rain and steers by it", but nobody calls her that. She was born during a thunderstorm in 1839, two years before the Blackfeet-Strómalvar Accord, and she was twenty-three when she watched Thornfolgha negotiate the Fort Benton Treaty with American territorial authorities. She decided she wanted to be like Thornfolgha and then spent 164 years becoming something entirely different: a rider and someone who keeps the herd alive and the boundary visible.

Her father was Jean-Luc Deschamps, a half-elf whose blood carried French, Blackfoot, and elvish lineage, three continents in one man. She grew up speaking Langtungae, English, and horse. She wears the standard Strómalvar working outfit: wide-brimmed beaver-felt hat, leather crop top, red bandana, duster coat, canvas trousers, and hand-tooled riding boots with the river-wave motif. She carries a loaded Ruger Blackhawk .357 on her right hip because she lives alone in grizzly and wolf country, and she has fired it in anger exactly twice in 187 years.

She drives a beat-up 2019 Ford F-250 with 140,000 miles on it, the radio permanently tuned to country out of Great Falls. She sings along to Merle Haggard badly and with enthusiasm. But the real work happens on horseback, with Dust, a fourteen-year-old bay quarter horse gelding she narrates her day to as though he's a colleague. She tells him where they're going, asks his opinion on fence placement, and waits for him to flick an ear before saying, "Yeah, that's what I thought too."

At thirty-five she completed her Sádhaefarth working as a ranch hand near Polson, where she befriended a human cowboy named Earl Whitfield. Earl taught her to shoot a revolver. She taught him to read cattle mood from the set of their ears. He died of a heart attack in 1907, and it was the first time she fully understood what it means to be an elf among humans. She returned to the Compact and hasn't left for more than a week since.

Régha is steady, blunt, dry-funny when she bothers to talk, and profoundly uninterested in anything outside the borders of her world. She can predict weather three days out from the sky but couldn't name the current president without thinking about it. She doesn't read the news, doesn't own a television, and uses her smartphone exclusively for phone calls, weather apps, and photographing cattle injuries for the vet. This narrowness is her greatest strength and her greatest weakness: she knows her world with 187 years of accumulated depth, but when the outside world intrudes, she has little understanding of the systems generating the intrusion.
